10 Promising Video Game Sequels That Completely Killed Their Franchises

7. Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever
Gearbox Software

There isn't much arguing here- Duke Nukem Forever has made it damn near impossible for Duke to ever legitimately return.

This isn't necessarily the fault of Gearbox Software, but Duke Nukem Forever was a massive failure. Forever was critically panned and wasn't a commercial success, a result of the game's messy and incomplete status.

Because of how much of a joke Duke Nukem Forever is, it seems extremely unlikely that we'll ever see the return of Duke Nukem anytime soon. His biggest appearance in gaming since the release of Forever was as a pre-order bonus for the re-release of Bulletstorm. Even that felt a little flat in comparison to how Duke Nukem is supposed to be.

There just isn't much place for game characters like Duke Nukem anymore, especially when his last game was such a travesty.
