10 PS1 Games That Completely Messed With Your Mind

5. Boku No Natsuyasumi

This quirky release completely subverts what is to be expected from a video game. Largely devoid of any evolving story or sense of peril, you play as Boku, a 9 year old boy in 1975 enjoying the Japanese countryside during a stay with his aunt and uncle, beautifully rendered in anime style. In the game you can engage with the world around you, completing actions including bug-catching, fishing or flying a kite, but without any real targets or tests of skill.

Firstly, the visual style of this game is very unusual for a PS1 game, being much more in line with anime films of the era. If you add to this a sense of atmosphere and non-linear gameplay style, Boku no Natsuyasumi makes for an almost otherworldly experience. Although never adapted for the west, the title would be popular in it's native country, spawning sequels and a re-release for the PSP.
