10. The First Fistfight - Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Even though it eventually works its charms on you, the first hours of Kingdom Come: Deliverance are a slog. Some of that is on purpose, as the RPG is intentionally obtuse and methodical in the way it transforms your everyman character into a sword-wielding badass, but a good chunk is down to good, old-fashioned terrible game design.

While you get more freedom in how you tackle missions later on in the title, during the tutorial quests everything is pretty straightforward and linear. That's not too bad though, and one of these early objectives tasks you with the relatively exciting prospect of beating up a neighbour. The only problem is, Kingdom Come's melee system is piss poor.

Trying to knock this guy out becomes an exercise in extreme patience, as you're locked into the same counter-attack animations over and over again, barely getting a punch in yourself. Not only does it take far too long to complete, but it's essentially the first taste of combat you'll get in the game, which sets a dangerous precedent for the title to come. Not only is it ridiculously frustrating, but it can actively sour your impression of the whole experience.
