10 Rage Quit Moments That Made Us Leave Video Games Forever
3. Insta-Fail Stealth - The Order: 1886
There is potentially nothing in video games as unnecessarily frustrating as forced stealth sections. Having to slowly follow NPCs without being seen or being suddenly restricted from using weapons to sneak around dumb enemies whose A.I. is very clearly not programmed for this kind of play can make for the worst parts of otherwise stellar experiences.
Sometimes developers like to go one step further with the torture though, and make it so that being seen by even a single enemy forces a restart. Franchises like Assassin's Creed have relied on this structure plenty over the years, but the worst example of it might be in the dreadful The Order 1886. The standard third-person shooting in that title wasn't exactly revolutionary, but it did the job. The stealth, on the other hand, probably only made it to the final product because the game would have been about two-hours long without it.
Mechanically speaking, sneaking up on guards to pull of stealth kills felt far clunkier than it needed to be, while the guiding hand of the scripting sucked out any freedom or actual fun the segments could have held. Oh, and make even one mistake and you're instantly dead, sent right back to the start of the section.
If you weren't already done with The Order, one of these missions would have put you straight over the edge.
