New: $250 | Used: $65 Hands-up everyone who remembers Tomba. Anyone? No? Fair enough. You were probably too busy in 1997 being blown away by 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64 to pay much attention to this psychedelic 2.5D caveman platformer. Made by the great Tokuro Fujiwara (Mega Man, Ghosts & Goblins), Tomba was well received at the time and sold pretty well. The 2D levels were actually designed using 3D graphics, so have a strange semi-3D appearance, and the mission system meant that you didn't just traverse levels from left to right but had to explore them, Metroidvania-style. As you can see from the picture, the game was awesomely trippy too; doesn't that picture remind you of the laughing scene from Evil Dead? A sequel for Tomba was made, but its developer Whoopee Camp went out of business soon after. That, combined with Tomba's quality, rarity and relative obscurity make it a well-known collectors' treasure.
