10 Rarest Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Games Ever

2. Ecco The Dolphin Box Set

It's hard to imagine how anything revolving aroun the most famous dolphin in video-games could classify as 'rare'. Sega's sub-aquatic platform puzzler was one of the most popular games on the Mega Drive, spawning a less successful sequel and an 'edutainment' spin-off called Ecco Jr. Buying these games in the 90s was as simple - if a little more expensive - as getting your hands on a pack of Pogs. However, obtaining the legendary Ecco The Dolphin Box Set was a whole other matter. This prized box was only released in the UK, where it came out in conjunction with the London aquarium, which housed a real dolphin called Ecco. The box set contained the game itself, a cassette tape with music from the likes of U2 and Shakespeare Sister (I'm not sure whether they wrote dolphin-themed songs just for the game), a t-shirt, and a shared adoption certificate for the real Ecco the Dolphin! Of course, Ecco's probably dead by now, but you can still pretend he was part-yours once upon a time. This box set is one of the more valuable bits of Mega Drive memorabilia, recently fetching upwards of $400 on eBay.
