10 Real Video Game Leaks Everyone Thought Were Fake
7. The PS5's Dev Kit
From a design perspective, the PS5 is the odd one out when assessing the mainline PlayStation consoles. From the PS1 to the PS4, they've all been simple black (or grey) boxes, without much extra flair.
In comparison, the PS5 looks like something out of Star Trek, and the unusual design of the console is something that was mirrored in the unusual design of its dev kit.
For the most part, dev kits don't look like anything special. They usually look quite ordinary and bland, as was the case with the PS3 and PS4 dev kits, which were both just black boxes. So when the dev kit for the PS5 (a render of which is pictured above) appeared to have leaked out, a lot of people were taken aback.
Given how conservative Sony usually is with its console design, this bizarre V-shaped device couldn't possibly be anything to do with the PS5, right? That was a common thought at the time, with many fans feeling genuinely worried that the PS5 might actually look like this, while others doubted the validity of the leak entirely.
However, it was totally real.
Buried in a Wired article that revealed some brand-new information about the PS5, the outlet noted that the official dev kit looked extremely similar to the leaked version. In addition, Sony "refused to comment" on whether or not the dev kit would look similar to the final product, and in the end - mercifully - it did not.
