10 Reasons God Of War Is The PS4's Best Exclusive
6. Progression Is Simple Yet Deep
An easy mistake made by a lot of games these days is the tendency to over-complicate progression mechanics to the point that it's offputting or intimidating, whereby a game is injected with too many systems for its own good.
God of War, thankfully, is a refreshing riposte to the trend of games that make levelling and upgrades a chore rather than a fun by-product of exploring the world. Though there's depth here for those that want it, thanks to a smartly laid-out UI, even casual players shouldn't have too much trouble crafting new items for Kratos and Atreus and unlocking their wide suite of powers.
There's an addictive quality to unlocking new abilities as you progress, and thanks to the game liberally throwing XP and hacksilver at you, it never feels like a job either. In a time where so many AAA games want to keep the player trapped in a grind-loop for as long as possible, that's positively miraculous.
