5. The Stories
Resident Evil's plots have always had a charming B-movie feel to them. From the haunted houses and corporate scheming to the weird science and soap opera relationships, it's part of what makes the series so fun. And they always seem to end with an explosion. On the other hand the Silent Hill games weave a much more compelling narrative, focussing on the tortured pasts of the central characters, or the disturbing history of the town itself. Silent Hill 2 for instance is a masterclass in videogame storytelling, presenting a shocking psychological mystery that unravels along with the character's mind, and touches on difficult topics like incest and domestic abuse. Not exactly lightweight stuff.
