10 Reasons Super Mario Odyssey Isn't Game Of The Year

9. It's Too Easy

Now, to many players, recent Mario games have never really been about a controller-throwing level of challenge, but even so, it's surprising how easy Odyssey is compared to the last few Mario titles.

Reaching the end-game is an absolute cakewalk, in large part due to the revamped lives system, and though the post-game content does give players a huge spike in difficulty, this is basically only unlocked after playing for around 15 hours.

In this sense Odyssey's general level of challenge is the polar opposite of its other major GOTY rival, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which posed a surprising level of difficulty from the outset.

Perhaps allowing players to toggle a more conventional lives system or adding a difficulty slider could remedy this, as it would at least allow players to be punished by death if they so wish. Shouldn't Nintendo games be about accessibility for all sorts of tastes, after all?
