10 Reasons Super Mario Odyssey Isn't Game Of The Year
8. Handheld Mode Is Disappointing
One of the big appeals of a Mario game on the Nintendo Switch is, of course, the portability factor, so it's a shame that playing Odyssey on the hybrid console in handheld mode is a bit of a mixed bag.
For starters, the resolution takes a significant hit in portable mode, which while completely expected and understandable to an extent, nevertheless makes playing the game on a big HDTV far more tantalising.
Though many Switch games look fantastic handheld, Zelda most of all, Odyssey ultimately feels like a game made for the big screen, and along with the portable equivalent failing to convey the game's huge scope all that well, it just doesn't look that great on the move.
Also, the controls feel far more awkward handheld: throwing Cappy out and jumping on top of him, for instance, is a nightmare of uncomfortable button holds and presses, only reinforcing that this game needs to be played big-screen style to realise its full magic.
