10 Reasons Super Mario Odyssey Isn't Game Of The Year

4. Co-Op Isn't That Great

Though Odyssey does feature co-op play, it's honestly a pretty piecemeal offering. Clearly designed for parents to play with their young children, co-op sees player two controlling Cappy but effectively just being along for the ride with Mario, ultimately contributing fairly little to the overall adventure.

Considering that Super Mario 3D World allowed absolutely insane four-player co-op, Odyssey's offering feels pretty underwhelming by comparison.

Yes, it's more wide-open style of gameplay certainly would've made more substantial co-op challenging to implement, but a development team this skilled surely should've been capable of pulling it off.

Fingers crossed the next Mario game steps things up in this regard.
