10 Reasons Super Mario World Is The Best 2D Mario Of All Time
7. Introducing Yoshi
And speaking of the green Dinosaur, Super Mario World deserves a serious amount of points for introducing the world to one of the most loveable and famous sidekicks in video gaming history.
Producer Shigeru Miyamoto had always been a keen fan of horse riding and the classic Country and Western films of old and the idea of putting someone like Yoshi into a Mario game had always been something he had wanted to make a reality ever since the franchise started up.
Yoshi was initially conceived as being a Koopa-like creature, with the saddle on his back initially being a shell that Mario would sit on. Yoshi allows players to eat up enemies with his long tongue, grant them an extra by absorbing a hit for them and introduce a whole new take on platforming.
Yoshi's powers in the game are dependant on the enemies he eats, with Red Shells granting the ability to let loose an array of fireballs, Blue Shells granting him the ability to fly for a short amount of time, Yellow Shells triggering a few small earthquakes where he walks and, finally, the Green Shell gives the green Dinosaur his trademark ability of being able to fire a projectile.
