Although the PS4.5 is undoubtedly a way to make sure that VR games can run on Sony's console more efficiently once they start requiring more power down the line, there's a sense that the company is only shooting themselves in the foot by introducing another console at the same time as their virtual reality set.

Think about it: there's still plenty of people cautious about VR as it is, so for the general consumer who has a choice between something they're familiar with (an upgraded console) or a brand new and untested product (VR), then they're obviously going to invest in the safe bet.

As a result, the already expectedly small launch of the PSVR isn't going to be aided by the addition of a new console for players to worry about. Sony has already stated that they're treating their VR system as if it was any other console launch, so having two machines coming out so close together can't do anything but add unnecessary competition for both pieces of hardware.
