10 Reasons To Get Excited About Warhammer 40K: Darktide

Warhammer Darktide
Games Workshop

Any game is made better with a solid soundtrack, all the more if it's built around engaging action and a heavily stylised atmosphere.

Warhammer games have a good history with soundtracks, with THQ's Space Marine and the Dawn of War franchise sporting scores that fit the epic action perfectly. The more recent Mechanicus also has a unique sound, with grand choir vocals and orchestral music mixed in with surprisingly effective electronic sections. Nothing says 40k quite like an angelic choir punctuated by heavy bass and electric riffs.

But inspiration is widespread, and if Darktide can take a cue from anything then 2016's Doom is the best. It's hard to imagine any game that had a more appropriate soundtrack. After all, heavy metal is the perfect accompaniment to any overblown orgy of violence.

A classic metal OST would be fitting for this charnel house of the far future we've been promised.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
