10 Reasons Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Is STILL The Best Game Of The Generation
4. Hidden Mechanics
This somewhat relates to the previous point but it’s so extensive that it deserves its own entry. Like mentioned earlier, the tutorial in this game is really cut down, meaning many of the hidden mechanics will remain hidden unless you try literally everything. A good example of this is shield surfing – this gets taught to you in the snowy mountainous region of the game but can be figured out by trying to front flip with your shield out. This allows you to surf seamlessly down any decline which can lead to some great time-saving and funny moments when it doesn’t work exactly right.
Octo balloons are another example of such mechanics, as you can attach them to TNT to wipe out of horde of enemies without a single attack or, if you’re feeling really creative, you can attach several of them to a raft and discover infinite aerial travel – this one might take multiple attempts.
You can even use the terrain to change certain items, like dropping chuchu jelly on ice or in fire to change its colour and give it an extra effect. Or, if you find a rusty weapon and want to give it more of a sheen, throwing it at an inhaling Rock Octorok will give you a nice clean blade – albeit one which’ll come flying back at your face.
