5. The Lycan Attack - Resident Evil Village
While not technically a boss fight, Resident Evil Village's first major enemy encounter is against a massive fleet of werewolf-like mutants known as Lycans.
The player is tasked with fending the Lycans off using both their weapons and the environment, and given the sheer number of enemies the game throws at you, it's incredibly easy to become overwhelmed and die.
The key, really, is to never stick in the same place for too long, and to appreciate that you're not actually supposed to kill every Lycan, but simply survive for a set amount of time until a cutscene takes over.
Nevertheless, after a fairly safe opening to the game, the Lycan attack represents a significant, highly stressful difficulty spike, and proves especially infuriating if you're playing on Hardcore difficulty.
On Hardcore, you can spend hours on this section alone, enough that you might be tempted to restart the game on a lower difficulty, and honestly nobody could blame you.
Even on Standard difficulty it's no picnic, though, especially if you haven't realised it's simply about running out the clock rather than killing every last enemy.
