1. Trying To Connect All The Games - Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Mr Freeze
Square Enix

This unnecessary prequel to SquareEnix's most iconic IP has several moments that ruffle our feathers. You can see the twist behind Jack's true identity coming a mile away. Jack dropping the F-Bomb while battling a boss is pure cringe.

However, the biggest problem is the narrative. Because Final Fantasy's plot is pretty barebones by today's standards, we expected this origin story to be more complex. But the writers went overboard, giving this reimagining the most convoluted plot possible (and that's say a lot, considering how confusing Final Fantasy gets).

Rather than sticking with the original tale, Stranger of Paradise added in all this nonsense to explain how every Final Fantasy game is connected (even though most instalments worked as self-contained storylines.) Just to make sure the player gets this reference, the game concludes by unsubtly name-dropping Emperor Mateus - the overarching villain of Final Fantasy II.

The stories of each Final Fantasy are already convoluted enough. Why would anyone try and mesh them together? That's like blending Marvel, Star Wars, and Harry Potter together, and expecting it to make sense.

The stories of Final Fantasy worked fine for the last 30 years when they were separate. Why in the name of Bahamut did the developers think NOW is the time to squish them together?
