10 Ridiculous Rumours You Believed About Pokémon Games

6. Missingno. Can Erase Your Save File

Missingno. was one of the most talked about oddities in the original Pokémon games, and implicit in achieving some of the more useful exploits. The glitchy €˜creature€™ could be obtained by surfing up and down the eastern side of Cinnabar Island, after following a number of specific steps across Kanto. The most famous function of capturing a Missingno. was its use in duplicating items in your inventory. However, it would also make many screens it showed up in appear scrambled, particularly if it was entered into the Hall of Fame. This led to rumours that Missingno. was capable of deleting Pokémon from your party, or even erasing your entire save file. There have been no known cases of this actually happening, but Nintendo€™s statement on the issue does suggest that you may need to re-start your game if scrambling issues get out of hand: €œMissingno. is a programming quirk, and not a real part of the game. When you get this, your game can perform strangely, and the graphics will often become scrambled. The Missingno. Pokémon is most often found after you perform the Fight Safari Zone Pokémon trick. To fix the scrambled graphics, try releasing the Missingno. Pokémon. If the problem persists, the only solution is to re-start your game. This means erasing your current game and starting a brand new one."
