10 Ridiculous Things We Just Had To Go With In Bioshock
2. Sea Slugs Give You Magic Powers
Yep, sea slugs. Apparently these guys secrete some kind of weird genetic material - known more commonly as ADAM - that can be extracted, harnessed and used to Splice (the process of rewriting cellular structure to create new powers and stronger humans). So, in other words, you can gain the magical power to fry your friends with fireballs or freeze them in place by going to the depths of the ocean, grabbing a native slug and squeezing out all of its juice. It's probably a bit more technical than that with some science stuff involved, but basically everything that happens in Rapture is caused by someone discovering these little slugs harness the potential to revamp human evolution. As we know, doing this causes practically everybody in Rapture to go absolutely loopy and turn into the hostile Splicers. With no regulations on ADAM use (remember, Rapture is all about freedom), everyone and their mother went bonkers on slug juice and everything descended rapidly into complete anarchy. Even more weirdly, these slugs are implanted into the stomachs of Little Sisters, as this yields significantly more ADAM production. This is what happens when you harvest a Little Sister; Jack or Delta extract the slug from the stomach and crush it revel in its juicy ADAM goodness. Unfortunately we can confirm that common garden slugs probably won't give you levitation powers and the power to summon miniature tornados. But by all means, go check and report back.
