On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ubisoft could commit to the modern-day storyline, making it a major component to the full game - maybe even make it the entire game. It might be difficult to get behind depending on where you stand on time period favouritism, but would refined how we interact with these portions of the game.
If Ubisoft don’t want to commit to such a thing, at least have a free roaming area with its own side-quests and objectives. Perhaps split the game down the middle, half in the past and half in the present. The two timelines could interact, say with information learnt in the past affecting places you can access in the future.
Not to mention, we have a few interesting modern day characters that are there to play with - the assassins introduced through Syndicate and Unity, as well as the old favourites, Shaun and Rebecca, the Templars that are in Rogue, the nameless and faceless protagonists of the modern day portions of Black Flag and Rogue.
There is a world there with stories to be told, but as yet, it's not being used.
