After defeating the game's final boss Kessler, he transmits a number of memories into Cole's mind, resulting in one of the best video game reveals of the last decade. We find out that Kessler is an alternate future version of the game's protagonist, Cole, having been married to Trish and even started a family with her. However, instead of facing off against his nemesis The Beast, he decided to flee with his family as civilisation fell around him, but eventually Kessler killed his family, while a grief-stricken Kessler was unable to fight him. Instead, Kessler decided to travel back in time with the intent to rewrite history, killing Trish to ensure that Cole isn't tied down by any emotional attachments, and will be strong and fierce enough to take down The Beast later on. Kessler dies, and Cole utters the final line, "I hate everything about Kessler, but when the time comes, I will be ready." It's a completely mind-blowing twist but one that also makes total sense within the scope of the game, and makes for a satisfying conclusion regardless of whether you have Evil or Good Karma. It left plenty open for the sequel, but even if Infamous 2 would never have happened, the game made it pretty clear that Cole would now be ready to destroy The Beast. Marvelous.
