8. Dark Souls 3 - Untended Graves
In a world full of death, having an area of relative reprieve is a much welcome light in the bleak darkness within the Souls series.
In Demon’s Souls this was The Nexus; Dark Souls 2 had the scenic Majula; and Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3 had Firelink Shrine. Acting as safe areas where players can chat to other characters, purchase new items, and upgrade their stats, making it back to one of these areas after besting a boss is always a cause for celebration.
In Dark Souls 3, however, players can discover what this place of hope will look like when the flame eventually burns out.
A secret area that can be discovered behind an illusory wall just after Oceiros’ boss area, The Untended Graves is a desolate place enveloped in darkness. Make it a little further, though, and you’ll realise that you’re back in the Cemetery of Ashes, the place you began your adventure. Only now the area is in even more ruin and guarded by tougher enemies
The worst part is seeing Firelink in darkness. With all hope in this future world gone, the area distils an uneasy sadness and sense of loss as players explore this familiar area.
