10 Scariest Levels In Non-Horror Video Games

8. Gears Of War 2 - Abandoned COG Outpost

The Gears of War series (or just Gears now) is synonymous with mindless, over the top violence and its multiplayer.

And while the story beats mostly follow large, bombastic set pieces and grandiose action, there's a section of the second game that caught many people unawares.

The team are sent to an abandoned Coalition outpost to discover more information on the Locust and its queen. From the off, as soon as you enter the gates, you begin to get that unease that some things here will definitely go bump in the night.

Admittedly yes, it doesn't take too long before it descends into standard Gears fare of "murdering all the things in splashy ways", but not initially. That slow build adds tension and fear to an otherwise assumed action sequel.

Navigating dark, desolate corridors, encountering monitors with creepy faces on them, it would otherwise be normal in a horror game. That it's in a Gears game was a curve ball, just to keep players on their toes and trigger fingers.
