Arguably the biggest franchise not named Halo that Microsoft has, Gears of War has been a monumental success since the release of the original game in 2006. That original game is heralded as one of the most successful and beloved games of the console generation, refining the third person cover shooter to near perfection. It was specifically heralded for its graphical quality and impeccable sound design, helping define the XBOX 360 as the console for gamers who wanted blockbuster experiences.

Gears of War 2 is a blockbuster experience if there ever was one. It expands on the original game's graphical and sound capabilities, increases the scale and gore of the action sequences and further develops the narrative. In particular, there is further depth given to protagonist Marcus Fenix and his comrade Dominic Santiago, giving them more emotional complexity and key narrative moments, with Santiago's arc being one of the most devastating storylines in any shooter.

Gears of War 2 helped refine the multiplayer experience that the original did so well introducing to the world, implementing Horde Mode to great acclaim from both fans and critics. While the sequel isn't a revolutionary experience, it improves on its predecessor in every way.
