10 Sci-Fi Video Game Sequels Better Than The Original
4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
The original Metal Gear Solid is one of the greatest games on the original PlayStation, revolutionising the stealth genre with the shift to 3D, the enthralling narrative and characterisation, and creative director Hideo Kojima's impeccable creativity in approaching boss battles and overall game design.
While the prequel Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is often heralded as the high point of the franchise, the direct sequel Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is just as impeccable and manages to improve upon the already staggering original game. While Sons of Liberty caused controversy at the time for the bait and switch tactics regarding the new protagonist Raiden, it is now widely regarded as a masterpiece of 2000s gaming.
The best element of Sons of Liberty is the narrative progression and Kojima's expansion to tackling greater themes of existentialism, freedom of thought and the rise of the new digital age. It is practically a post-modern work of art, on top of further improving upon the original's gameplay mechanics, with some of the best enemy AI in history.
While both of the first two Metal Gear Solid games are masterpieces, Sons of Liberty remains the most thought provoking and challenging entry in the series.
