10 Secret Game Over Screens That Were Absolute Genius
4. Tomb Raider (And Tomb Raider Anniversary) - Fool's Gold
Lara Croft has been one of gaming's most famous figureheads ever since the original 1996 release - and she's suffered a fair few deaths at the hands of players over the years, too. However, probably the coolest way for Lara to succumb to one of the many deadly traps she encounters is in the Midas Palace level, found in the first game and again in the remake, Tomb Raider Anniversary.
The story of King Midas is one of despair and caution - everything he touches with his hands turns to gold, including his daughter. Correspondingly, in Midas' Palace, there's a giant hand sculpture. Even to those familiar with the story, it seems to be just an innocent decoration fitting in with the theme of the tomb - and many players made the mistake of jumping on it.
Touching the sculpture spells doom for poor old Lara - in truly spectacular fashion, she slowly starts to turn into solid gold. It happens feet first as well, so there's just enough time for her to realise what's going on before she topples over, dead as a golden dodo. The moral of this story is listen to the morals of fairy tales - who knows when they might come in handy?
Oh, and don't touch King Midas. That's pretty important, too.
