From its earliest days, Mortal Kombat never shied away from introducing secret characters and challenging the player to prove that they are worthy of being called the ultimate fighter. A classic example comes from the introduction of Reptile, who appeared at random moments throughout the game and taunted the player into finding him.

Getting the chance to shut him up took a lot of patience and button mashing. During the Pit level, players needed to wait until a shadow appeared over the moon. When that happened, you needed to earn two flawless victories and perform a character fatality. Finally, Reptile revealed himself and transported you to a secret level.

What’s interesting about the Reptile pit is that is was one of the earliest secret locations in a fighting game. Imagine playing Mortal Kombat in an arcade for the first time and getting to see a hidden level. It would have been satisfying to beat Reptile once and for all.
