Nostalgia also plays an important part in Map 31: Wolfenstein in Doom II. Constructed to look like the first level map from Wolfenstein 3D, Map 31 can be accessed in the industrial area.

This secret location contains various classic features of the Wolfenstein 3D zone. It has the same dark textured walls and layout, with enemies jumping out at the player in a steady stream of gunfire. Other similarities include the path that the main character needs to walk in order to make it to the end of the zone.

Map 31 also has several key differences from the original. Enemies like the brown guards and German Shepherd dogs have been replaced by Wolfenstein SS guards and demons. This was done to make the level tougher, with the new enemies being able to take more damage.
