7. Castlevania - The Inverted Castle

It's great when a game as old as Castlevania can still surprise you, as although Konami's legendary Metroid-twinning behemoth became the blueprint for every subsequent gothic action-RPG (Dark Souls' caged elevators are clearly a little nod to those seen here), it's this 1997 original that features an entire section of the castle thousands of us totally missed first time through.
