Rachel and Eric are the soon-to-be ex-lovers from the Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes, that are probably the most tragic characters in the game. On top of their lovers' quarrel, they are the two survivors within their group that are the most likely to die, get infected, or be cocooned by the vampire colony inside the ancient tomb.

Keeping both of them alive can be quite tricky, which is why it's easy to assume you can't really do it.

However, the game does let you save both Rachel and Eric, although this outcome is hidden behind an option that would make you believe you doomed one of them to a certain death.

When Rachel is suspended over a chasm, hanging from a rope attached to Eric, the game makes you choose between cutting her loose or holding on to her.

The former option would have you believe that Rachel will die, but the girl will actually survive the fall, whereas trying to save her will result in Eric falling with her and not enjoying the same kind of luck.

The choice to let her go strains her relationship with Eric, but it is secretly the only way to keep both of them alive in the ending.
