10 Sequel-Proof Video Game Endings (That Got Sequels Anyway)
4. Red Dead Redemption
An ending so final, the sequel it got isn't even really a sequel.
Red Dead Redemption has one of the tightest, most well-told storylines in gaming history. You really didn't need a sequel, at least not one that continued following the Marston family, because everything that needed to be said for the story to work was said.
The tale of John Marston hunting his old running buddies on behalf of the US Government contained all the details needed for that story to be satisfying. Knowing more would've been nice, sure, but you didn't really need it. However, more details would indeed come eight years later with the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Red Dead Redemption told the story of a gang that had fallen apart years ago, while RDR 2 is about the long, agonizing process of that fallout. What could've been simply a playable wiki entry, just filling in gaps of info with no story to tie it together, turned into one of the most heartfelt storylines in gaming history.
Red Dead Redemption did not need a sequel, but thank god we got one anyway.
