7. WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Day and night cycles are commonplace in video games nowadays but back in the NES era, it was a big deal. Such a big deal in fact that we had to have dialog boxes appear out of nowhere to slowly spell out a phrase indicating the shift from day to night. In Castlevania II: Simons Quest, that phrase is the incredibly thought-provoking: WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE. Its a fantastically blunt statement to say the least but lets look past the sheer absurdity first and consider the implications behind it; is there a good night to have a curse? What makes this night so particularly horrible for the cursed? Sadly, neither question is answered by the mysterious dialog box and its cryptic statements. In all seriousness, this has to be remembered as one of the more bizarre moments in videogaming. It could simply be a translation error or it could have been a quite poor attempt by Konami to instil a sense of dread within the player. In fact, without the accompanying, dramatic change in music, the Horrible Night box would have done nothing but encourage inquisitive looks. Its a quote so strange that you wonder what the developers original intentions actually were.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
