10 Spiritual Successors To Classic Video Games
9. Kaze And The Wild Masks Succeeds Donkey Kong Country
Kaze is the latest in a long line of quality platforming games aiming to recapture the glory days of the '90s.
There have been plenty in recent years, both 2D and 3D, that are worth your time, like: A Hat in Time, Super Lucky's Tale, the Yooka Laylee series, and Freedom Planet. It just so happens that this one closely resembles the exploits of a certain ape who hasn't had an original platforming title since 2014.
Indie developers have served as the perfect embodiment of the expression "If it ain't broke don't fix it", with many of everyone's favourite experiences resurfacing as downloadable passion projects.
Kaze combines elements from Kong's classic Rare days with the most recent Tropical Freeze entry. You can pick up containers in the same way DK would pick up and throw barrels. Floating crossbows function in the same way as barrel cannons launching players across levels. Power ups mimic mine cart and swimming levels, even Kaze's spinning bunny ears help slow descent like Dixie Kong.
Like all good successors, its influences are obvious and help keep the spirit alive.
