10 Strongest Non-Boss Enemies In The Super Mario Franchise

9. Chain Chomp

Chain Chomp is a sentient ball-and-chain and can usually be found tied to a stake. He will hop around and gnash his teeth while trying to bite at anyone stupid enough to get near him.

After appearing in dozens of games, there have many variations of this foe. In Yoshi's Island, Incoming Chomps launch themselves from the background and crush everything they crash into. In some games like Super Mario 64, this barking menace cannot be injured or killed.

Because he is heavy and steel-skinned, Chain Chomp will destroy certain objects if he charges into them. In Super Mario Odyssey, you need to take over Chain Chomp's body and use his immense strength to hit switches or break open walls.

In Super Mario Sunshine, you need to lug a Chain Chomp around Pianta Village by his chain to give it a bath (which sounds a little creepy out of context). Because Chain Chomp is super strong, he will fight you every step of the way, making this one of the most difficult missions in the game.

Although his attacks vary upon each appearance, he always serves as one of the toughest adversaries in each game of the franchise.
