7. Emerald And Ruby Weapons - Final Fantasy VII
The twin secret bosses of Final Fantasy VII had to be on this list somewhere. While nowhere near as hard as a later boss on this list, that definitely isn't for a lack of trying. But like that later entry, we have basically zero build up to their appearance, and know next to nothing about them.
One can glean from their names that they were some kind of ancient superweapon, perhaps used by Aerith's people long ago in some kind of war. However, the game does little to convince you that any of them survived those wars and the ravages of time.
And when they do show up near the end of the game - like most Final Fantasy secret bosses - they are completely inconsequential to the story. Which is good because that means you don't HAVE to subject yourselves to these things if you don't want to.
Taking out just one of these monstrosities is itself a herculean task, but even Herc would throw in the towel when facing down the prospect of fighting both of them.
