It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that one of the best pure gameplay experiences of this generation, also made for a great multiplayer mode.

Doom took a big page out of Quake's playbook, by having players blast each other away in rapid fashion in arena-based maps. It was a throwback we welcomed with dismembered limbs! While Doom's single-player put you in the shoes of a space Terminator, blowing heads and chainsawing through torso's, the multiplayer couldn't really have you being that powerful. So players were neutered somewhat to make for a better experience, and it ended up being something akin to Halo meets Quake.

While the multiplayer was a gas in and of itself, Doom really shined with the SnapMap feature. Essentially a map-creation tool, SnapMap allowed players to create their own zany/awful/sadistic/brilliant versions of Doom. It was a quality addition that elevated Doom's multiplayer from really good to awesome.
