10 Surprisingly Great Multiplayer Modes In Single-Player Games
3. Nioh
Nioh was, in many ways, a straight-up copy of the Dark Souls franchise. The kicker is, in many ways, Nioh is better than any Dark Souls game.
One such area developer Team Ninja improved upon the FromSoftware formula, was the asynchronous multiplayer. In Souls games, you would find signposts from other players and summon them to help you. In Nioh, you can resurrect the AI ghost of a fallen player and fight them. If you win you get the loot they carried at the time. It was a very fun system that made each battle tense and rewarding.
Lots of games nowadays do asynchronous multiplayer, like the Forza series, but this one took things that extra little bit to make it worthwhile. It's not only fun to test yourself against other players, but the reward of getting all their loot makes it worthwhile. And it's cool to know there's a ghost version of yourself running around killing folks. Well, cool is relative.
