10 Terrible Levels That Haunt Otherwise Perfect Video Games
5. Desmond's Sections - Assassin's Creed II
The decision to split the story of the Assassin's Creed games between current and historic timelines has always been a contentious one. While many argue that the duality is great and that it adds much needed context to the events as a whole, many others suggest that video games negate the need for context by nature and that the existence of the Animus is superfluous.
But, whatever your stance on the narrative merits of the present day stories, there's no denying that they're painfully boring to play. Most obvious in Desmond's "adventures" with Assassin's Creed 2, the decision to have this part of the story bleed into the gameplay was simply baffling.
Despite attempting to give Desmond some of the impressive free-running abilities of his assassin ancestor, the sections where you actually control the man are awful. Consider the hideout, for example, where Desmond can climb and jump over boxes and stairwells for no other reason than to try to legitimise his existence.
But, with the whole thing taking place in such small and confined areas, none of the excitement from the main parts of the game translates into this at all.
