10 Terrible Video Game First Levels That Made Us Rage Quit

Despite allegedly being designed with newcomers to the Shin Megami Tensei franchise in mind, the fourth game is packed to the gills with gut-wrenching difficulty spikes, the first of which occurs right at the damn start.

In fact, SMT IV's tutorial is arguably the toughest part of the entire game - the first dungeon, Naraku, will absolutely kick the ass of all but the most prepared players.

Given that you've got low health, no other party members, and powerful enemies to face off against, grinding is basically necessary to avoid regular party wipes.

The only minor solace is that the game allows you to save anywhere, effectively letting you save scum your way to victory, even if that's hardly the most exciting way to kick any game off.

If you're able to make it through Naraku in one piece, you're basically golden for most of what the rest of the game will throw at you.

But it's such a maddeningly difficult section that it's tough to imagine many newbies to the series feeling satisfyingly "onboarded" by it.
