As expected of an action RPG, Odin Sphere's enemies increase in level and strength as the game progresses. The player first encounters Geists during the final chapter of the first protagonist (Gwendolyn's) story in the Netherworld filled with restless dead.

Within the story of the game, Geists are defined as being the souls of people who committed atrocious crimes while alive. They have been sent to the Netherworld to face eternal torture and torment for their actions and have a single-minded hatred of the living.

Therefore, the attack the player ruthlessly and use their thrashing limbs and swift movements to inflict damage, before darting away. The Netherworld seems to have a seemingly infinitely supply of Geists and when they all rush the player at once, even with a high level character, this can be alarming.

Players are unable to avoid facing this threat, since these enemies are an integral part of this setting and reflect the mindset of their ruler: the Queen of the Dead.

Geists represent what the characters could become, depending on their actions. These enemies, who have been deliberately stripped of their humanity and face eternal damnation, act as warning for each of the main characters.
