Ah, the Souls series. Despite being non-horror titles, is there any series out there that readily creates fear quite as well?

The fear from Dark Souls generally comes from the fact that anything can kill you relatively easily. From the lowliest Hollow to the deadliest hideous spider/woman hybrids, there's something around any corner that can really wreck your day.

There are, however, quite a few genuinely unsettling monsters in the series. You could take you pick really - the horrible Gaping Dragon from Dark Souls 1, basically anything that walks (or slithers) in Bloodborne - you get the idea.

But one of the most unsettling monsters has to the Mimic. These creatures are cunning; hiding in plain sight, pretending to be chests. Then, when you try to open them, they reveal themselves to be a mass of teeth, a giant tongue and massive legs (while crunching down on your head, naturally).

Many a Souls player has spent time being wary of the Mimic. It generally pays to give each chest a little nudge with your weapon before you open it, as Mimics can kill you instantly if you're not careful.

Pro tip: you can spot a Mimic by checking the chain on its right side. If it's straight, it's a Mimic. If it's curly, it's a real chest! They also breathe occasionally...scary stuff.
