10 Things Alien: Isolation Will Do Better Than Aliens: Colonial Marines
2. Expanding On The Films
For years Colonial Marines was touted as the official sequel to Aliens we always wanted but never got. Such strong promises naturally created strong anticipation. In the end we got a standard story about marines being attacked by Aliens with forced connections to the films that contradict previously established canon. The only questions it answered were those that never needed answering in the first place. Instead it only made an already convoluted series (thanks to the AVP films) more confusing. Isolation on the other hand is actually attempting to tell a story worth telling. Amanda Ripley was only mentioned in a brief scene of the directors cut of Aliens where Ripley is informed of her death. Amazingly, she had never been used in the franchise since. Creative Assembly saw this and used that as the basis of the story. Now, obviously this could still end up being a contradictory mess like so many other additions to the Alien franchise, but could it really be as bad as Colonial Marines? Sure, but at this point that seems unlikely. And even if it is bad, just by connecting to the heart of the films (Ripley) and attempting to expand on an element of the series weve yet to explore is a huge step in the right direction. Lets hope they are able to pull it off.
