10 Things An Xbox Player Learned Playing Uncharted For The First Time

1. Nate, Sully and Elena Are Incredible Characters

Uncharted 2 Nate Elena Sully
Naughty Dog

If there was anything I've learned most spending my time with Uncharted, it would be just how charismatic and loveable the series' main characters really are. Without being too presumptuous, I'd imagine that the first thing people think of when it comes to the series would be its amazing visuals, or rather, its overall cinematic flare.

What were my overriding initial thoughts? Well, they all come down to the relationship between Nate, Elena and Sully.

These three may just be the most entertaining video game trio I've ever come across. They're just so incredibly relatable, hilarious and cool, but more importantly they're human. It's this humanity that emanates from Uncharted's scripts in every single last page, evidenced by Drake's long-standing fan-favourite status within the PlayStation community, as well as the sheer level of anticipation there is for A Thief's End.

Though the franchise may border on the sensational at times, its crux - demarcated by a formidable cast of characters - ultimately returns to complex thematic elements of friendship, centred around Drake and his fellow cohorts. Whilst undoubtedly dark and indeed being marketed as such, Uncharted 4 in no way marks the series' entrance into adult and mature story-telling. Creatively, at least, it just handles it in a different way.

Players are suitably (albeit prematurely) lamenting the culmination of Naughty Dog's series and, whilst it's true that most will miss the phenomenal gameplay and exemplary graphical excellence the series can boast of, Uncharted's legacy will ultimately be decided by the fondness audiences have for its heroes. For their sake, I hope that its finale is worth the emotional turmoil.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and the Golden Age of Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled.
