10 Things Capcom Wants You To Forget About Resident Evil

10. Resident Evil Is Skating On Thin Ice As A Franchise

Capcom seem to feel that they can live off good graces forever. It's true that Resident Evil was once one of gaming's biggest franchises, but that was a long time ago. Irreparable damage has arguably been done over the course of many years, and it has definitely hurt the series. It's not only the games that have been suffering, the movie side of things has been too. Years of churning out effectively the same, predictable formula has grown tiresome for film fans. Yes, the latest entry, Resident Evil: Retribution did make money in 2012, but it's at the cost of consumer satisfaction. This has led to a situation wherein the film series peaked with 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife. That was the highest grossing film in the cannon, pulling in almost $300 million worldwide. Retribution pulled in almost $60 million less, and it appears Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (to be released in 2017) will be the last one. That's not really through choice, but after 5 films - and with a 6th on the way - there's not much else left for the writers to explore. Perhaps the same curse has afflicted the gaming side of things, Resident Evil is creaking, and Capcom don't seem to know where they want to take things.
