10 Things Nintendo’s Best Video Games Can Teach Pokémon Sun & Moon

4. 'Geometrize' Gym Puzzles - BoxBoy!

The puzzles inside Gyms and hideouts have been very hit or miss over the course of Pokémon's twenty year history, but there's a very simple way to make sure future versions are more of the former than the latter. Consider the simple glory of Giovanni's Viridian Gym in Pokémon Red, and you'll have an idea of the perfect standard.

Avoiding overly convoluted or gimmicky puzzles in the gyms seems to have been difficult for the series of late, so geometrizing the puzzles in the style of a game like BoxBoy! would be a right step.

This may seem overly simple at first, but don't write it off just yet...

BoxBoy's puzzles are worked around the movement of the various boxes the titular boy is able to generate in each stage. The simple, shape-based puzzles are logically solved but also devilishly difficult on occasion. Opting for this type of substance over style in the flashy new gyms would make them more of a challenge again for the seventh generation.
