While it may not include as many named towns or locations as a standard Pokémon game ever has, the detail of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's map should definitely be a measure of inspiration for Sun & Moon. The areas it does include are mostly larger and more detailed than even those of X & Y, and there's a far greater sense of variety than Pokémon games have achieved before.

Even in the 3DS games, every Pokémon game starts to feel familiar before long. Caves and Forests will be a few stages of trainers and wild Pokémon, while the Routes that connect notable areas are never anything more than simplified versions of the same.

In Ocarina of Time, there's a much better variety of detail on offer. The sum of its parts lead to something that feels much more alive than intriguing than any Pokémon map has ever managed. For now the overworld of a Pokémon game is merely the means to transport players from one encounter to the next, so making a better feature of the new region is an absolute must.
