10 Things You Didn't Know About Heavy Rain

8. The Game Originally Had A Supernatural Subplot

Of all the elements of the game that were scrapped from its final release, this is probably the one we're most thankful for. At several points during Heavy Rain's story, protagonist Ethan Mars blacks out, only to awake in a strange location clutching an origami figure - leading players to wonder whether the killer is toying with him directly, or whether he is unwittingly the killer himself.

These blackouts originally included fully-realised gameplay sequences in which Ethan would traverse a surreal, terrifying submerged world. While a little flow-breaking and superfluous to the plot itself, the idea of these trauma-induced nightmares is certainly interesting - that is, until their true nature is revealed. It turns out these "nightmares" were actually brought on by a psychic connection between Ethan and the Origami Killer, established when Ethan's first son Jason is killed.

If that sounds butthole-clenchingly cringeworthy, then don't worry - you're in the approximately 100% of people who feel exactly the same way. Luckily, the developers also realised this, and dropped the supernatural element entirely. Seems they learned from their earlier entry Fahrenheit, which made a similar misstep to near-universal ridicule.
