Coming up against brutal boss battles is all part of the Soulsborne experience. Each entry is stuffed with dozens of them, with each designed to put players’ skills to the absolute limit in epic bouts where one mistimed roll could mean the difference between victory and soul-crushing defeat.

Boss fights are major points in each of these games. And these games are typically kind enough to warn players that one may be upon them with either a wall of fog that leads to the boss area, or by taking players into large open areas that only a large enemy could fill.

But not every boss encounter is as generously telegraphed, such is the case with The Pursuer in Dark Souls 2.

A hulking knight with a sword as massive as the damage it deals, this boss is fought in The Forest Of Fallen Giants; but players will meet him outside his boss arena first.

Nearby the Cardial Tower bonfire, players can ascend a ladder to a raised platform scattered with items and hollows that have been lobbing firebombs. However, before players can register the suspicious size of this place, The Pursuer will drop from the sky and proceed to beat them to a pulp.
