The big twist in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was that we wouldn't be playing as Solid Snake for the majority of the game, but as new character Raiden. Unfortunately, this revelation went down like a fart in church once it became apparent that Raiden was an absolute tallywhacker.

Hideo Kojima obviously wasn't happy about the negative response to Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, and so by the time Guns of the Patriots rolled around, he was going to make damned sure you loved him.

In Metal Gear Solid IV, Raiden is, for reasons that are never explained but let's say nanomachines, a badass, supercool cyborg ninja. He arrives in Act 2 to have a fight with Vamp in the most fabulous moment in Metal Gear Solid history, and later in the game he sacrifices himself to save Snake.

He sacrifices himself to save Snake by getting crushed by an aircraft carrier, just to clarify.

Then in the next scene, Snake and Otacon are having a conversation and they just casually toss out that Raiden is fine. We saw the little light in his eye go out like at the end of The Terminator and everything. Why didn't he just die? But sure, okay, he's fine.

An hour or so later, Raiden sacrifices himself to save Snake again. And then he comes back again. Please love him.
